hCG units calculator.
hCG vials are labeled in IU, not mg. Enter IU for the vial and IU for the amount, and the calculator gives syringe units. It starts on an example.
Use the dose your prescriber gave you and the concentration printed on your vial or pharmacy label. Vialist does the math; it does not give dosing advice.
The fields start on an example (5,000 IU vial, 10 mL, 250 IU). That example is not a dose for you.

IU is not the same as syringe units
Two different things are both called units here. IU, or international units, measures biological activity and is how an hCG vial and an hCG dose are labeled. Units on a U-100 insulin syringe measure volume: 100 units is 1 mL, so 1 unit is 0.01 mL. The concentration in IU per mL connects them. IU cannot be converted to mg or mcg, so keep the vial and the amount in IU.
units on the syringe = amount in IU ÷ concentration in IU per mL × 100
Worked example, using the numbers the calculator starts on. A 5,000 IU vial with 10 mL of liquid is 5,000 ÷ 10 = 500 IU per mL. An amount of 250 IU is 250 ÷ 500 = 0.5 mL, and 0.5 mL × 100 = 50 units. Example only. Use the dose your prescriber gave you.
For one hCG product, the Novarel label (Novarel prescribing information, DailyMed) lists the concentration you get when 10 mL of Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is added: 500 IU/mL for a 5,000 IU vial and 1,000 IU/mL for a 10,000 IU vial. Your product may differ, so use the instructions for the vial in your hand.
Worked examples
The two concentrations below are the ones from that Novarel table. The amounts are arbitrary examples chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not doses, and being in this table does not mean an amount is right for anyone. Always use the dose your prescriber gave you and the concentration on your own label.
| Amount (IU) | 500 IU/mL | 1000 IU/mL | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Units | mL | Units | mL | |
| 100 | 20 | 0.2 | 10 | 0.1 |
| 250 | 50 | 0.5 | 25 | 0.25 |
| 500 | 100 | 1 | 50 | 0.5 |
| 750 | More than one U-100 syringe | 1.5 | 75 | 0.75 |
| 1000 | More than one U-100 syringe | 2 | 100 | 1 |
Each cell is computed by the same code as the calculator above. Read across your amount, then down to the concentration on your label. If your concentration is not here, type it into the calculator.
Check before you draw
- Confirm the syringe says U-100. Other scales (U-50, U-40) give different numbers for the same mL.
- Units and mL are not the same thing. On a U-100 syringe, 10 units is 0.1 mL.
- Compare the result with the pharmacy label, or ask your pharmacist to check it with you.

Questions
Straight answers.
How many syringe units is 250 IU?
It depends on the concentration. At 500 IU/mL, 250 IU is 0.5 mL, which is 50 units on a U-100 syringe. At 1,000 IU/mL it is 0.25 mL, or 25 units. Example only. Use the dose your prescriber gave you.
Why does my dose say IU but my syringe says units?
They measure different things. IU is the amount of the product by biological activity. Syringe units are volume, 0.01 mL each on a U-100 syringe. You need the concentration in IU per mL to go from one to the other.
Can I convert IU to mg?
No. IU measures activity, not mass, so there is no fixed conversion this calculator can apply. Keep the vial and the amount in IU, and the calculator will not let you mix IU with mg or mcg.
How do I find my concentration?
Divide the IU in the vial by the water you added. A 5,000 IU vial with 10 mL is 500 IU per mL. Use the diluent and the amount in the instructions for your product.
Does Vialist tell me what dose to take?
No. You enter the dose your prescriber gave you. Vialist does the unit math and keeps the record.
